Carlos Devin Fernandez, Ph.D.

Carlos Devin Fernandez (Ph.D., Italian Studies) is a dedicated researcher and educator who specializes in late medieval Italian literature, history, and culture, with a particular focus on Dante Alighieri. Devin’s current research, which is anchored in transatlantic intellectual and cultural history in the long nineteenth century, focuses on Dante’s reception in Cuba, notably in the works of José Martí and others. He is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Italian at Brooklyn College, CUNY.
Born and raised in Miami, Devin attended Florida State University where he earned his B.A. in Greek and Latin (with Honors in the Major, and with minors in Italian and History) in 2016 before completing his M.A. in Italian Studies in 2018. Nominated as a recipient of the “Mentoring Recruitment Fellowship” in 2019, Devin then attended the University of Texas at Austin, completing his Ph.D. in Italian Studies in 2025.
As an instructor of Italian, Devin has a proven track record of teaching excellence, student engagement, and subject-matter expertise combined with innovative and effective pedagogical approaches. He has been recognized for multiple university-wide awards for outstanding teaching and excellence, receiving several nominations at both FSU (“Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award,” 2018) and UT-Austin (“Texas Foreign Language Teaching Excellence,” 2021).
