Research

Carlos Devin Fernandez is primarily interested in late medieval Italian literature, history, and culture, with a particular emphasis on Dante Alighieri.

His current research explores Dante’s reception in nineteenth-century Cuba, particularly in the works of José Martí, who is often remembered as the Apostle of Cuban Independence. Anchored in transatlantic intellectual and cultural history, this research offers a new comparative reading of both figures, drawing on insights from postcolonial and reception studies. A Cuban American scholar of Dante, Devin’s research joins his academic interests and cultural identity, and he hopes it will help foster greater discourse between Italian and Cuban Studies.

Given his academic and personal background, Devin has extensive research interests across multiple disciplines. Some topics include: (proto)humanist language debates; historical Romance linguistics; the reception of Greco-Roman antiquity; military history; ecocriticism.
